The University of Gothenburg puts in extra courses in Ukrainian

The University of Gothenburg is Sweden's leading university for education in the Ukrainian language. Now they are expanding the range and putting in extra courses for the autumn.

- We do everything we can to meet the great need for language skills in Ukrainian, says Petra Platen, Deputy Head of Education at the Department of Languages and Literatures.

The war in Ukraine has meant that tens of thousands of Ukrainians are expected to go to Sweden in the future. By mid-March, 14,000 had already come here and in its main scenario, the Swedish Migration Board estimates that 76,000 will seek protection in Sweden before the end of the first half of the year.

This means a great need for people who have knowledge of Ukrainian, such as interpreters, mother tongue teachers, translators and officials at state and municipal authorities.

Beginners course is given this fall

At the Department of Languages and Literatures, courses in Ukrainian have been held since 2018. At short notice, the beginners' course Introduction to Ukrainian has now been launched this autumn. The course, which is 7.5 higher education credits and internet-based, should not have taken place until the spring of 2023. Several completely new courses are also under development and will be available as early as the autumn.
