On Thursday, October 28, 2021, the Inselspital Bern and the University of Bern will open their medical collection to the public. The opening event will take place in the sitem-insel building. The digital medicine museum is the first of its kind in Switzerland. Numerous devices, instruments and objects from everyday hospital life tell the story of practical, clinical medicine in the 20th century under the title "Doing Medicine". At the same time, the digital museum aims to stimulate reflection on how modern medicine came about and how it works.
The Inselspital Bern medical collection includes around 10,000 exhibits, mainly from the period since 1900. They represent activities, treatments, inventions and everyday life in the hospital. The medical collection benefits from the close connection between Inselspital and the University of Bern. Prof. Hubert Steinke, director of the digital medical museum, is also the chair of the Institute for Medical History at the University of Bern. The collection is curated by the University of Bern.
Conveying history with stories
The digital medicine museum in Bern is breaking new ground. It turns away from exhibition concepts with gruesome tissue samples or terrifying instruments of bygone times. It is not the external appearance that should be displayed, but rather the dialogue with the viewer is emphasized. The digital medicine museum tells short stories under the motto "Do medicine". Videos give an insight into the varied history of medicine at Inselspital and at the same time trigger questions and thoughts about today's medicine.
The team of the digital medical museum of the Insel Gruppe and the University of Bern cordially invites you to take part in the opening event.
