Comenius University enters the academic year with a new visual identity


Bratislava, August 13, 2021: From September 1, 2021, Comenius University plans to use a new logo depicting the building on Šafárik Square. The design helped the university prepare the GoBigname studio. The creative director of this studio, Michal Pastier, was ranked among the Top 100 European innovators according to Google and the Financial Times, and with more than 200 creative awards he is one of the most acclaimed creators in the region. The university will continue to use the historical emblem with Ján Amos Komenský on special occasions.

Comenius University in Bratislava is the oldest Slovak university. The logo depicting John Amos Comenius has been used since 1969. In 2008, this logo was redesigned and began to be used in two more versions, front and profile. In 2018, the logo of the centenary with the image of the main building was added to it. After the centenary celebrations, the question arose as to which of these symbols the university should keep and how to bring them together.

"I graduated from the Department of Marketing Communication at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and for years we discussed with colleagues the need for more representative communication at our university. That is why I was very pleased with this initiative of Comenius University in Bratislava, "said Michal Pastier, creative director of the GoBigname agency, which prepared the redesign. "Together with professionals such as Ondrej Jób, the holder of the TDC Certificate of Typographic Excellence New York, or the top graphic artist Rudolf Letko, we have created a new visual philosophy for the university. The basis is a monolinear design, which allows you to combine the logo with different backgrounds. Unlike the previous features, it is suitable for presentation in the online world, where more and more communication is currently moving, "added Pastier.

The whole project includes a change of the university logo, redesign of the logos of 13 faculties and 8 components, a new set of typographic tools, redesign of the color scale, setting of a visual language for communication in social networks, and a number of templates for basic documents and applications. Since the change, the university promises to make the brand more recognizable and the communication clearer .

"The new visual identity builds on the classic symbols of our faculties and universities, while expressing respect for traditions. We present ourselves in a form that will allow us to differentiate ourselves and visually connect the entire university, "said Radomír Masaryk, Vice-Rector of Comenius University, who coordinated the entire project. "We want our publications, stands at academic fairs, invitations to events or other documents to clearly communicate belonging to the largest Slovak university."

"Right today, perhaps more than ever, it is necessary to harmonize the content and form of our work, our results, our academic community . We must adequately present top science and quality education.
